Visiting Artist Lecture

Stephanie Pierce was raised in Memphis, Tennessee, and received her B.F.A. from the Art Institute of Boston. She also studied at Yale Norfolk School of Art and earned her M.F.A. from the University of Washington in Seattle. Her paintings explore relationships between light, time, and perception as they are reconsidered over time. In an interview, she said, “I paint during all times of the day, preferring daylight, and use the changes in light as it happens. In the process … I paint both towards understanding what I see and away from it until things are brought to a heightened experiential intensity and have a hallucinatory sensation.”

Pierce’s work is represented by Jupiter Contemporary in New York City and Miami, Alpha Gallery in Boston, and Steven Harvey Fine Art Projects in NYC. She has had numerous exhibitions throughout the U.S. since 1993, and her work has been published and reviewed in the New Yorker Magazine, Harper’s Magazine, Hyperallergic, and the Boston Globe, among others. Collections include William Dreyfus, Walton Family Foundation, Boston Public Library, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Pierce is a recipient of many awards and grants, including a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant in 2014 and a Peter S. Reid Foundation Grant in 2018. She has received two Fulbright travel grants and several artist residencies in the U.S. and France. For 10 years, she taught at the University of Arkansas before moving to New York City in 2016. Currently, she is Associate Professor of Painting at the Fashion Institute of Technology, where she was honored with a Faculty Excellence Award in 2022. She lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
